With the remarkable improvement of living standards, people are looking forward to more enjoyable and satisfying jobs. Under such circumstances, there is a heated debate on whether it is better to work only three days a week for more extended hours or work five days a week for shorter hours. From my perspective, working with a more laid-back and consistent schedule is beneficial in terms of working efficiency and lifestyle.
To start with, with a short working period, we can take a break from arduous and demanding workloads to be refreshed and energetic. On the contrary, with a time-consuming job, we are prone to be absentminded and have poor performance due to the lack of relaxation. Worse still, working all day long without exercise can be detrimental to our health, causing backache, neck pain, or even heart attack. For example, my aunt, Jane, works as an engineer at Google with a standard time arrangement. In this way, she can nap after lunch to sharpen her brain for complex tasks in the afternoon. Undeniably, it is the regular breaks and enough sleep that guarantee our productivity.
Furthermore, a five-day working pattern enables us to have a balanced lifestyle, contributing to our physical and psychological health. Generally speaking, facing fewer problems and challenges daily, we can regularly devote our leisure time to playing sports and accompanying families. On the other hand, if we are sometimes overwhelmed with excessive work, we can easily break our daily routines, such as picking up kids from school, riding a bicycle, and watching television dramas. As a result, we will lose our enthusiasm and well-being. For example, driving a public bus, my father Tom has five hours of leisure time on workdays, balancing work and life. With ample time, he enjoys tasting dishes with the whole family and goes jogging and swimming with his friends regularly. Thanks to his laid-back job, he can follow his heart and stay in touch with family members and friends. On the other hand, working three days per week, people will face the dilemma of shifting between distinctive lifestyles.
In a nutshell, considering the limited energy and daily routines, we can never emphasize the importance of regular working schedule.
