IELTS INDEPENDENT WRITING: Hybrid task questions.

What is a Hybrid Essay?

A hybrid essay task gives a single topic but you are asked two separate questions related to the topic. You address both questions individually. There can be a combination of different question types, including argumentative, opinion, or even discussive.

You need to address both questions clearly so that you do not lose points as 25% of your score is for task response, exhibiting how well you perform the task.

Example: “International companies have great benefit to many countries in which they are. At the same time, there is concern about their impact on local economies and the environment.

IELTS ACADEMICS WRITING TASK 1. Comparing a pie chart and table.

This should not be a challenge. Since there is a pie chart and table presenting different items, then you can describe the data of either in a specific paragraph but still try to make comparisons where necessary. The format of this kind of response would be:

An introduction- Paraphrasing the data presented or stating what you see of the data presented.

Overall Statement- This will explain the variables or major trends of the pie chart and table. That is, the increases/ decreases, lowest/ highest or percentages/proportions.

IELTS ACADEMIC WRITING TASK 1. Comparing Charts.

Comparing two charts is quite common in IELTS writing task 1.  Sometimes the charts might be of the same items but different years or of different items. It is even possible to have three charts.

First off, get to analyze the data presented and whether there are years or not. Looking at the years is important because it dictates the tense you are to use in the response.

You then start with the introduction, overall statement and the description like any other chart is described. Sometimes test takers write the overall statement at the end, which is quite okay.
