The line graph compares the amount of fish and various types of meat purchased in a particular European country over a period of 25 years.
It is clear that chicken was the only meat whose consumption saw an increased trend over the period shown. However, demand of the rest experienced an opposite tendency.
In 1979, beef was by far the most popular of these foods, with around 220 grams consumed per person per week. Lamb and chicken were eaten in similar quantities, roughly 150 grams each, while much less fish was ordered, at about 65 grams. Just five years later, chicken overtook lamb, became the market leader in 1989, kept its position and reached a peak at 250 grams by 2004 .
Between 1979 and 1989, sales of beef dropped by 20 grams from 220 grams every week, and lamb saw a similar decline in the same time. In the following years, both of them experienced a dramatic decrease, with the former to about 110 grams and the latter to a mere 70 grams. The figure for lamb consumption kept a relatively stable trend, reduced to merely about 20 grams from 1979 to 2004.
