ANSWER.
Soaring forms of crime are becoming a concern in numerous societies, with many people advocating for longer jail terms for criminals while others opine that other measures can suffice. I vehemently believe both points of view can help curb crime rates.
First off, longer jail terms give authorities ample period to rehabilitate to educate inmates on the perils of crime. Some serial offenders might require quite a time to get mentally upright in terms of committing crimes. In any case, it is a good way of warding off would be criminals because of fear of long jail terms. Long incarcerations give prison authorities time to educate convicts with other skills that might help them integrate in society when they leave prison.
Alternatively, it is imperative for governments to accord societies resources needed so as to mitigate crimes. For example, putting surveillance cameras and subsidies for the poor. Nevertheless, other alternatives like community service can be of help because convicts will still serve the society as they serve their terms. Doing community services can be a lesson to others in the society to avoid crime.
I partake, in a way of reducing crimes, alternative methods like surveillance cameras and subsidies for the poor should come first because they mitigate crimes. Longer incarcerations have not suffocated crimes in societies because the causes are not addressed. In some cases, longer prison sentences breed trauma among convicts and thus should be avoided.
In sum, long incarcerations might offer room for rehabilitation however, alternatives like community services and offering societal resources to halt committing crimes should be the first choice for offenders.
